Supplements to boost progesterone production

Hi there Warriors,

I hope this year is starting off to be a bit better for you than last year. I thought a good place to start this year would be advice about balancing your hormones - not always easy!

As well as using herbs to reduce estrogen there are a few dietary nutrients you can use to help increase your natural progesterone production, most of which are easy to incorporate into your diet, or using certain nutritional supplements.

Increasing your progesterone levels will help to rebalance your hormone levels between estrogen and progesterone. This obviously helps reduce estrogen dominance and the symptoms it can cause.

Increasing your progesterone can also help to reduce your symptoms of endometriosis.

Adding certain nutrients to your diet can help increase your natural progesterone production

Supplements to boost progesterone

Vitamin B6 - To increase your progesterone, a good way is to increase your vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) levels. B6 is necessary for the production of progesterone. Available as a supplement, B6 is also found in sweet potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, tuna, salmon and poultry. As mentioned earlier, B6 also helps to reduce estrogen levels in your body.

Zinc - Zinc is essential for hormonal health and it is extremely important for the production of adequate levels of progesterone. Zinc is the mineral that prompts the pituitary gland to release follicle stimulating hormones, which in turn promote ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. Good sources of zinc are shellfish, crab, dark chocolate, chickpeas, pumpkin, watermelon and squash seeds.

Magnesium - Magnesium plays a very important role in hormone regulation and is therefore one of the nutrients that boost progesterone levels. This is another nutrient that helps regulate the pituitary gland.
You can take dietary supplements as well as eat more foods that are good sources of magnesium such as dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds especially squash and pumpkin, mackerel, whole grains like brown rice, dark chocolate.

Vitamin C - Research has shown that women who take vitamin C have significantly increased levels of progesterone, and in research it was found that women who took 750mg of vitamin C per day had an increase of progesterone by 77 percent.

Chasteberry (Vitex) - A herb that is good for balancing hormone levels in the body is chasteberry, also known as vitex. It can stimulate progesterone production and reduce levels of estrogen, as well as amounts of prolactin, which is another hormone that can lead to low progesterone in the body.

Vitamin E - Vitamin E can help to boost progesterone levels which was reported in a study published in the Journal of Ovarian Research. Researchers found that when patients were given vitamin E, almost three-quarters of them had a significant increase in progesterone levels.
